Born and raised in Berkeley, California, Morgan has been part of the San Francisco Bay Area independent film community since he was a teen– when he and his father, Rick Schmidt, a filmmaker and author, made MORGAN’S CAKE, a fictionalized version of Morgan’s life which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Morgan’s documentary work has explored climate change, multi-generational farm families, New York creative artists, and how the pandemic has impacted marginalized artists through a series called COVIDeos. His films ON HER OWN (2015), THE RAVENITE (2018), and ANTON: CIRCLING HOME (2020) have won awards, screened at numerous film festivals and been acquired for US & international distribution.

Morgan’s work is known for drawing in the viewer on an emotional and visual level so that they feel connected to the subjects of his films in a deeper way. It’s the emotional connection that Morgan experienced from his earliest work with his father that continues to drive him as a storyteller. When not shooting, Morgan loves running marathons, surfing & bikepacking.
